Microsoft Excel MCP Tools for AI Agents

Let an agent find workbooks, read and aggregate worksheet data, flag data issues, update cells, and manage worksheets in OneDrive.

Available Tools

13 tools available in this integration

MicrosoftExcel.AggregateWorksheet

Summarize a worksheet by grouping rows and computing per-group aggregates in one call.

MicrosoftExcel.CreateOrEditWorkbook

Create a new .xlsx workbook or edit an existing one in OneDrive for Business.

MicrosoftExcel.GetWorkbookMetadata

Get a workbook's structure: worksheets, named ranges, and optionally extents and objects.

MicrosoftExcel.GetWorksheet

Read a worksheet range with the detail you choose, with guardrails for large sheets.

MicrosoftExcel.ListCellIssues

Scan a worksheet (or the whole workbook) for data-quality problems as a structured list.

MicrosoftExcel.ListWorkbookComments

List a workbook's comments, or the replies on a specific comment thread.

MicrosoftExcel.ReadWorksheet

Read a worksheet range with the detail you choose, with guardrails for large sheets.

MicrosoftExcel.ReplyToWorkbookComment

Post a plain-text reply to an existing comment thread on a workbook.

MicrosoftExcel.SaveWorkbook

Create a new .xlsx workbook or edit an existing one in OneDrive for Business.

MicrosoftExcel.ScanForDataIssues

Scan a worksheet (or the whole workbook) for data-quality problems as a structured list.

MicrosoftExcel.SearchWorkbooks

Find Excel workbooks in OneDrive by keyword or folder, returning their item_ids.

MicrosoftExcel.UploadWorkbook

Upload a complete .xlsx file into OneDrive for Business, preserving it byte-for-byte.

MicrosoftExcel.WhoAmI

Get information about the current user and their Microsoft Excel environment.

Why agent-optimized tools matter

Built for intent, not API schemas

Ask the agent to "find the quarterly workbook, check the revenue sheet for errors, and save the corrected version." Arcade picks the right Microsoft Excel tools without guessing workbook IDs or worksheet ranges.

Up to 100x fewer tokens

Microsoft Excel reads return workbook structure, ranges, comments, and issue lists at the requested detail, so the agent can inspect only the cells and metadata it needs instead of loading entire workbooks into context.

Complete the workflow end to end

Find the workbook, inspect its structure, read the relevant ranges, check issues and comments, and save the approved changes through one toolkit designed around the complete spreadsheet task.

Make actions predictable and controlled

Arcade tools return structured results and useful errors across users and runs. Teams can apply scope restrictions, redaction, and approval policies so agents follow the same controls every time.

Securing Microsoft Excel

The more capabilities agents get, the more useful they are. However, more capabilities bring more risks of undesired effects such as data loss and exfiltration.

This is why Arcade provides you with contextual rules that dictate how and when a tool is allowed to run. Arcade’s contextual access lets you govern tool visibility and behavior at every stage of execution and control who can see a tool, what inputs are allowed, and what comes back.

Learn about Contextual Access Policies

For Microsoft Excel, you can implement some of these policies:

Access when tools are listed for a user
  • Hide MicrosoftExcel.CreateOrEditWorkbook from agents unless the roles your IDP marks as workbook owners are active, so unapproved automation cannot alter shared financial models.
  • Deny MicrosoftExcel.UploadWorkbook to agents outside your approved data-operations roles, so an unreviewed file cannot replace a trusted workbook in OneDrive for Business.
  • Hide MicrosoftExcel.SaveWorkbook from agents unless the roles your IDP marks as workbook publishers are active, so routine agents cannot create or overwrite files in OneDrive for Business.
Pre-execution before each tool call
  • Block MicrosoftExcel.ReplyToWorkbookComment when the reply contains customer records, credentials, or confidential project details, so an agent cannot publish private data to a shared comment thread.
  • Require human approval before MicrosoftExcel.SaveWorkbook changes an existing workbook, so an agent cannot overwrite a shared forecast or operating plan without review.
Post-execution after the tool returns
  • Redact MicrosoftExcel.ReadWorksheet results for columns matching your payroll, bank-account, tax-ID, or employee-personal-data patterns before they reach the model.
  • Redact comment text and reply bodies from MicrosoftExcel.ListWorkbookComments, removing email addresses, phone numbers, and customer identifiers before the model sees the discussion.
  • Redact cell values from MicrosoftExcel.GetWorksheet results when the selected range matches confidential pricing, compensation, or customer-account patterns before the model sees the sheet.
  • Strip the cell values and surrounding row data from MicrosoftExcel.ListCellIssues results, leaving issue types and locations so data-quality scans cannot expose private records to the model.

How to use Microsoft Excel with your agent

Connect Microsoft Excel to an MCP client with Arcade's guided setup. Each end user authorizes their own Microsoft account, so the agent works with the workbooks that user can access.

Your questions, answered

A Microsoft Excel MCP server exposes spreadsheet capabilities as structured tools that an AI agent can call through the Model Context Protocol. After a user authorizes their Microsoft account, the agent can search OneDrive for workbooks, inspect worksheets, analyze data, and make permitted edits.

Microsoft does not provide a first-party MCP server for these Excel actions. Arcade provides the MCP access layer with per-user OAuth, approval workflows, response redaction, and scope controls, so the same Excel integration can be used from supported agents and clients.

Arcade agents can find workbooks in OneDrive for Business, inspect workbook structure, read worksheet ranges, aggregate rows, scan for data-quality issues, list comments and replies, create or edit workbooks, upload .xlsx files, save changes, and reply to existing comment threads.

Arcade requests the Microsoft Graph and OneDrive for Business permissions required by the actions you enable. Read-only workflows need file and workbook read access; editing, saving, or uploading requires write access, along with the user and refresh permissions needed for OAuth. Grant the narrowest access that supports your workflow.

Yes. Each user authorizes their own Microsoft Excel account through OAuth. Actions run under that user's authorization and can reach only the OneDrive for Business files and permissions that user has approved.

Yes. Contextual Access policies can require human approval before consequential Microsoft Excel actions such as editing, saving, uploading a workbook, or posting a comment reply. The call proceeds only after the policy's conditions have been satisfied.

Arcade proxies Microsoft Excel and OneDrive API calls and does not persist your workbook content as part of normal tool execution. OAuth credentials are brokered and stored encrypted at rest, and the model never receives raw credentials.

Any framework or client that can connect to Arcade's MCP gateway or tool APIs works, including LangChain, OpenAI Agents, CrewAI, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Visual Studio Code, Microsoft Copilot Studio, and GitHub Copilot.

Arcade refreshes access while the user's Microsoft authorization remains valid. If access is revoked, rotated, or can no longer be refreshed, Excel actions stop until the user reconnects their account.

Microsoft Graph, OneDrive for Business, and Excel service throttling limits apply to calls made through Arcade. Plan for throttling and retry responses when scanning large workbooks or making many worksheet requests; there is no separate Arcade quota that replaces Microsoft's limits.
